Flailed around haplessly in a Legacy GPT this weekend. I don’t really have Legacy cards but I cobbled together a pile and gave it a shot. I always think it’s a little disappointing when people feel they can’t play because they don’t have all the cards for a tier one deck. I respect that a person doesn’t want to throw away $10 on an entry fee without a reasonably competitive deck but I think there’s still a lot of fun to be had even if you don’t have duals or Force of Wills. For example, I just played an Affinity deck with Baleful Strix and artifact lands in it.
Bad Affinity (2014-09-13)
There were 14 players, a pretty good turnout for Legacy around here, I think. Four rounds, cut to top 8.
Round 1 vs Storm: I do not know all of the Legacy deck names. This was storm with Tendrils of Agony. Is it just called “Storm?” Anyway, game 1 opponent starts to go off but fizzles. I confess, I don’t really know what is going on. I try to follow my combo opponents’ game actions and pay attention as they describe to me what is happening but after a while I start thinking about what I’m going to have for dinner later.
Game 2, I keep a hand with a Rest in Peace but only 1 land (a Glimmervoid) and do not draw a second land for a few turns. Opponent further punishes me by Abrupt Decaying an Ornithopter I had, forcing me to sacrifice my Glimmervoid. Luckily, the storm deck fizzles again and I draw into mana to cast the Rest in Peace, ending the game. Opponent explains that in both games, he just got a little impatient and did some miscounting so I really just lucked out. I’ll take it! (Record: 1-0)
Round 2 vs Manaless Dredge: Another deck where I sort of know what’s going on, but not really. Game 1, opponent goes off and kills me by attacking with Bridge from Below zombies. His deck can win a couple of different ways, either by attacking with 2/2 zombie tokens or by Dread Returning a Flayer of the Hatebound and getting damage triggers. I watch him go off a second time and that’s the match. I learn that I probably need to just aggressively mulligan to some sideboard hate if I ever get another chance. (Record: 1-1)
Round 3 vs Mono Black Discard: This deck featured the new card Waste Not alongside lots of targeted discard, Liliana of the Veil, Smallpox, etc. I was able to barf up my hands quickly so the discard didn’t do much, and maintaining even a single attacker plus a Cranial Plating was good enough to get there. (Record: 2-1)
Round 4 vs Affinity: Opponent was on a similar deck to mine: take your Modern Affinity list and jam some artifact lands in there, basically. We ID’d into top 8.
Quarterfinals vs Manaless Dredge: Oh no, not this again! Game 1, he combos off around turn 3 or so. For game 2, I choose to put him on the play, denying him the free discard he’d get on the draw. I have a pretty nice turn 1, where I go: Ancient Den, Ornithopter, Mox Opal, Rest in Peace. We go on to game 3.
Game 3, he does get to put me on the play but I have the exact same turn one sequence for Rest in Peace and he concedes before even taking his first turn. He did have possible sideboard answers in the form of Mindbreak Trap so I could have gotten blown out by that… but he didn’t have it.
Then we split up the top 4. Fun day! I would definitely play ham sandwich Legacy again.
